Malaysia's inflation increases 1.4 pct in April

KUALA LUMPUR, May 22 (Xinhua) -- Malaysia's inflation increased 1.4 percent in April with the index points stood at 134.3 as against 132.4 in the same month of the previous year, official data showed Thursday.

The Department of Statistics Malaysia (DOSM) said in a statement that the rise of inflation in April was driven by an increase in the group of personal care, social protection and miscellaneous goods and services (4.1 percent), education (2.3 percent) and housing, water, electricity, gas and other fuels (2 percent).

The food and beverages group which contributes 29.8 percent of the total consumer price index weight, grew 2.3 percent in April.

The monthly headline inflation increased 0.1 percent in April as compared to March.

Meanwhile, core inflation increased to 2 percent in April as compared to the preceding month (1.9 percent).
