Seven boys have been shot dead by police in a border town in southern Afghanistan.

Police say they thought the boys were insurgents. They were however fetching firewood when police opened fire on them, according to Abdul Raziq, the police commander in the town.

The incident took place in the border town of Spin Boldak, in the Kandahar Province, in the south of the country.

The police involved have been suspended pending an investigation.

Civilian deaths are a sensitive issue in Afghanistan where President Hamiz Karzei has repeatedly warned U.S., NATO and Afghan forces to take every precaution to avoid civilian deaths.
