The island is currently undertaking a review into its controls on semiconductor, flat panel and integrated circuit maker technologies, which are regarded as critical to Taiwan’s economy.

Opposition figures have said even if the restrictions are eased, the technology and company operations should be kept in Taiwan.

Taiwan's opposition favours independence from Beijing and has repeatedly warned against easing controls, fearing closer economic integration.

Taipei has long imposed restrictions on high-tech firms to avoid China gaining a technological advantage.

China still sees the island as part of its territory.
