60,000 mobile base stations are about to be built by China’s largest mobile telephone operator.

The company, China Mobile, will invest $8.6 billion to build the stations for its third generation mobile networks.

Once finished, China Mobile's 3G network base stations will top 80,000 and will be able to handle faster data downloads.

On Wednesday, China's telecommunications regulator issued 3G mobile phone licenses to three domestic telecom companies.

China Mobile was one of those awarded a 3G contract.
