Anwar Ibrahim threatens to pull down government by Sep 16
Kuala Lumpur News.Net Wednesday 27th August, 2008 (IANS)
Malaysia's controversial opposition leader Anwar Ibrahim, who has just won a parliamentary by-election, says he will bring down Prime Minister Abdullah Ahmad Badawi's government by mid-September.
His opposition alliance Pakatan Rakyat (PR) would take over by Sep 16, The Star newspaper quoted the leader, who comes back to parliament after a decade, as saying.
Ibrahim has termed his election in a parliamentary by-election Tuesday as Malaysia's 'second political tsunami', an allusion to the outcome of the March elections when the ruling coalition Barisan Nasional (BN) was for the first time denied a two-thirds majority.
The opposition leader, who has earlier issued threats that he would bring down the government, said his victory brought new meaning to the word 'merdeka' (freedom).
Ibrahim, 63, promised that his opposition alliance that emerged strong with 82 members in parliament and control of five of the 13 states in the March polls would bring 'new hope to the people with its reform agenda'.
'We will stick to our promise that the price of fuel will be reduced when we form the government,' he told supporters after his win.
Speaker of the Malaysian parliament Dewan Rakyat Pandikar Amin Mulia announced Wednesday that the new member from Permatang Pauh, a tiny constituency in Penang that witnessed a vigorous campaign, would be sworn in Thursday.
Ibrahim won the Permatang Pauh by-election by a resounding 15,671 majority, getting more votes than his principal rival, BN's Arif Shah Omar Shah who only managed 15,524 votes.
Ibrahim's win was expected, media reports and commentators said Wednesday, despite his being slapped with a sodomy charge by a former aide -- a charge identical to the one he faced a decade back, which cost him his job as deputy prime minister and finance minister as well as his seat in parliament.
Ibrahim remains under probe and has refused to take a DNA test.
With a bulk of the opposition busy with Ibrahim's election, the government Tuesday pushed a bill that aims at making DNA tests mandatory if the court requires it.

Anwar's win
As a Malaysian by birth and having just returned from a visit to Malaysia, I welcome the news of Anwar’s victory. What I saw in Malaysia distressed me. The country has deteriorated in every facet. We felt unsafe throughout our stay. Reports of countless muggings, murders and the constant “look over your shoulder” climaxed when a personal friend was car-jacked. It is shocking to see for oneself what Malaysia has become. The West, and more importantly, Malaysians look to you, Anwar, to bring her back to her once state of glory. You must bring back fairness to all races and reward those based on MERIT, not based on religion or race. When this is achieved, Malsysians will find political stability and growth and with it, foreign investment and prosperity for all.

DSAI's antics
It really baffles me how easily the people have been tricked by Anwar. Do they not remember what he did when he was the Deputy Prime Minister. They make it seem like Anwar was this wonderful leader of the MALAYSIAN people. No, he was not. He was a sly, manipulative jerk, who cared for no one except for his young boy toys. He was a fudge packer, he is a fudge packer now. Nothing will ever change. All those who feel that Anwar is the one, you are in for a rude awakening. The only way to stop him is for the those who were elected under the PAKATAN banner to switch over to BARISAN. Only then will we have true representation. DAP thought they were going to gain by being with Anwar, are they in for a surprise. BARISAN is whats best for PEOPLE. PAKATAN is just a pipe dream.

Reply to Pachik Long
For 50 years my grandparents and parents have supported BN like faithful and loyal employees. But not any longer - why?? I’m 4th generation Malaysian and the racist policies have bled our potential and patience. Anwar may not be perfect, but there’s hope - a sense of hope that we (non-Malays) who are truly bumiputeras ourselves will be treated fairly and equally. We are not asking for handouts but given the opportunity to basic necessities like education and employment.
We have suffered enough and are willing to give Anwar a fair go and if his administration fails us then there’s always the next GE.
